Amroy Europe Ltd and Entropy Research Labs Partner to Introduce EPOBIOX, A Sustainable Bio-Derived Epoxy Technology for Fiber-Reinforced Composites

Press Release – July 8, 2009
San Francisco, CA

Entropy Research Labs, a California based provider of sustainable materials and products, announces a technology licensing and manufacturing partnership with Amroy Europe Ltd of Finland for their bio-derived epoxy technology, Epobiox. Under this agreement Entropy Research Labs will develop and manufacture formulations of Epobiox for the sporting goods, retail, and other industrial markets.

With today’s epoxy technology based primarily on raw materials sourced from petrochemicals, Epobiox departs from this paradigm and employs raw materials based on industrial waste streams of biomass processing, such as pine oils from wood pulp processing. “By taking cues from the natural world and applying modern chemistry techniques,” states Kimmo Kaila, Founder and President of Amroy Europe Ltd, “we are able to produce an epoxy resin system that is not only derived from sustainable resources, but performs as well as petrochemical based systems.” Epobiox systems can reduce petrochemical content of the overall epoxy system by up to 70%.

For the past two years, Entropy Research Labs has worked closely with Amroy Europe Oy to commercialize the EPOBIOX technology for fiber-reinforced composites. “With our background in materials engineering, specifically the R&D of fiber-reinforced composites, we were a natural partner for Amroy Europe Ltd for developing the EPOBIOX technology,” states Rey Banatao, Founder and CTO of Entropy Research Labs. “Our domain experience in sporting goods manufacturing give us the ability to better interface with those customers and tailor the resin system to fit various manufacturing processes.”

Per the agreement, Entropy Research Labs through its subsidiary Entropy Resins, will be the sole, world-wide provider for Epobiox to all sporting goods applications. Amroy will focus on industrial applications, namely the wind power energy market.
